Can i replace baking powder with baking soda when making a simple white cake??

or does it have consequences with flavor and appearance? im making a simple white cake from scratch...Can i replace baking powder with baking soda when making a simple white cake??
If you also have cream of tartar, you can use 1/3 baking soda and 2/3 cream of tartar and get almost the same result as baking powder. Baking powder also has a little bit of corn starch in it, but you (or I) probably wouldn't detect any difference as long as you also use the cream of tartar with the baking soda. If you only use the soda, the cake won't rise as well and will be off a little on taste.
