Yeast is a live organism that is 'woken up' by added sugar and warm water to it, in other words you activate it. Baking powder is a leavening agent that uses an alkaline and acid mixed with starch, that when combined with water emits gas causing the bread to raise. Baking powder comes in two forms, single or double acting, most people bake with double acting. Yeast can be dry active, or fresh yeast, like a cake.
